Published: Mar 30, 2026Effective: Apr 1, 2026
The Government of India has revised the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) under the Central Minimum Wages, effective 1st April 2026. Key Highlights: The revision is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to neutralise inflation impact on workers. Applicable to employees working in scheduled employments under Central Sphere such as construction, loading/unloading, security services, sweeping & cleaning, mining, etc. The increase is primarily in the VDA component, resulting in an upward revision of overall minimum wages. Employers are required to ensure that wages paid (Basic + VDA) are not less than the revised minimum rates. Employer Action Points: 1. Review current wage structures to ensure compliance with revised rates 2. Update payroll systems effective April 2026 salary cycle 3. Ensure contractors and vendors are also aligned with revised wages 4. Maintain proper wage registers and compliance documentation Important Note: Non-compliance with minimum wage provisions may attract penalties under the Code on Wages, 2019.
