The Chhattisgarh Government has notified the Chhattisgarh Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Act, 2025, published as Chhattisgarh Act No. 11 of 2026.
The amendment came into force on 8 July 2026, the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
Key Changes for Employers
The most significant change is the revision of the employee threshold. The Chhattisgarh Shops and Establishments Act will now apply to establishments employing 20 or more workers, instead of the earlier limit of 10 workers.
Other important amendments include:
Maximum daily working hours increased from 9 to 10 hours.
Continuous working limit before a rest interval increased from 5 to 6 hours.
Daily spread-over increased from 10½ to 12 hours.
Overtime limit increased from 125 to 144 hours.
Women may work during night shifts between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM, subject to government-notified conditions and safety measures.
Compliance Impact
Employers should review their employee strength, Shop and Establishment registration, working-hour policies, overtime records, shift schedules and night-shift safety arrangements.
The revised applicability threshold operates from 8 July 2026. Any statutory compliance obligation or liability relating to an earlier period should be examined separately.
