Employers working through the September payroll changes have been given additional time to complete their EPF compliance.
According to the EPFO circular dated 13 October 2026, the deadline for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remitting the corresponding statutory contributions for September 2026 has been extended from 15 October 2026 to 31 October 2026.

Why has additional time been provided?
The circular refers to the revision of the wage ceiling with effect from 17 September 2026 and the resulting changes required in payroll systems, employee-wise contribution calculations and statutory records.
Employers and other stakeholders had reported technical, operational and administrative difficulties in preparing and submitting the September ECR. The extension provides additional time to complete these adjustments and ensure correct computation and payment.
What should employers do now?
Payroll and compliance teams should use this period to:
Complete the required September payroll revisions.
Verify employee-wise wages and statutory contribution calculations.
Reconcile the ECR with payroll and supporting records.
Complete both ECR filing and contribution payment on or before 31 October 2026.
Retain the filed return, payment confirmation and calculation workings.
The extension is limited to September 2026
The circular expressly confines this relief to ECR filing and statutory contribution remittance for the September 2026 wage month. It does not extend deadlines for other wage months or dispense with other statutory obligations.
For employers, the practical message is clear: use the additional time to complete accurate calculations and close September compliance within the revised deadline.
